Stage 01

Broodstock: choosing the parent fish

Everything starts with the broodstock — the adult male and female tilapia kept specifically for breeding. Good broodstock are selected for healthy growth rate, strong body shape, and disease resistance, then held in dedicated ponds at a controlled ratio of males to females. Water quality here matters more than almost anywhere else on the farm: stable temperature, clean water, and proper feeding condition the fish to spawn reliably.

Stage 02

Breeding and hatching

Tilapia are mouth-brooders — after spawning, the female carries fertilised eggs in her mouth until they hatch, protecting them through the earliest and most vulnerable days. At a hatchery, eggs or newly hatched fry are carefully collected and moved into hatching trays or tanks with controlled, well-oxygenated water, where they finish developing into free-swimming fry.

Stage 03

Sex-reversal and monosex production

Left to grow naturally, a mixed-sex tilapia pond will breed continuously, overcrowding itself and stunting growth. That's why hatcheries produce monosex (all-male) fry: newly hatched fry are fed a hormone-treated starter feed for a short, carefully timed window, which reverses their sexual development. All-male populations grow faster and more uniformly, because no energy is lost to breeding, and pond numbers stay predictable.

Stage 04

Nursery: raising fry to fingerlings

Once sex-reversal is complete, fry move to nursery ponds or tanks, where they're raised on fine, protein-rich feed and protected from predators, extreme weather, and poor water quality. Over several weeks, they grow from roughly a gram into fingerlings — young fish sturdy enough to be graded, counted, and stocked into grow-out ponds.

Stage 05

Grow-out: the main growth phase

This is the longest stage — typically several months — where fingerlings are stocked into larger earthen ponds or, at LarGro, into our In-Pond Raceway System (IPRS) for higher-density, higher-yield growth. Farmers manage stocking density, feeding schedule, water exchange, and aeration through this stage. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) — how much feed it takes to produce a kilogram of fish — is the number every serious farmer watches here, since it drives both cost and profit.

Stage 06

Harvest and grading

Once fish reach market weight, ponds are partially or fully harvested using nets, and fish are graded by size. Larger fish may be sold immediately while smaller ones are returned to the pond to keep growing — a technique that lets a single pond produce multiple harvests over its cycle.

Stage 07

From farm to market

Harvested tilapia move quickly into the cold chain — cleaned, iced, and transported to market as whole fish or fresh fillets.
