In September 2018, a visit to China showed us a technology that would reshape LarGro's future. We built our own version, completed in July 2020 — here's how it works.
An In-Pond Raceway System places long, narrow concrete raceways inside a larger pond. Instead of spreading fish across an entire pond at low density, fish are held at high density inside the raceways, where water is continuously pushed through by paddlewheels or pumps. The rest of the pond acts as a natural water-treatment zone — settling waste, growing plankton, and re-oxygenating the water before it's recirculated back through the raceways.
Conventional pond farming spreads fish thinly, which means a fixed acreage caps how much fish it can produce. IPRS breaks that link. Because water quality is actively managed inside the raceways rather than left to the whole pond, fish can be stocked at far higher densities without the water quality collapsing — which is how 1.25 acres can produce 20–25 tons instead of the few thousand kilograms a conventional pond of the same size would yield.
Beyond yield, IPRS makes day-to-day farm management more precise. Feeding, health checks, and harvesting all happen inside a contained raceway rather than across an open pond, so farmers can spot problems earlier, harvest more predictably, and cycle multiple batches through the same footprint faster than a conventional pond allows.
Our current farm operations produce 3,000–4,000 kg per acre without aeration on conventional ponds. Between wider aeration and lessons carried over from IPRS, our target is 7,000–8,000 kg per acre — figures we walk through, ponds included, in our on-farm training sessions.
